Royal Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau Jug by Bessie Newbury. Superb quality and an excellent example of a Doulton Art Nouveau jug. The handle has a very slight loop and the background colour is a subtle grey-blue, which makes it very attractive. It's base has an incised BN, which stands for Bessie Newbury, who was a decorator at Lambeth between 1882 and 1922. She also worked with George Tinworth, Butler and others [8][9]. The mark would suggest that it was made between 1902 and 1922 [10]. There is a great 3D effect to the applied flowers. Although you see a few of these Art Nouveau jugs the glaze on this jug is really beautiful, it's really exceptional. |
