Hukin and Heath Glass Bowl with silver plated lid. The mechanism on this bowl is unusual.  Rarely is it seen attached to such unusual glass. The movement of the handle causes the lid to raise or lower via an eccentric disc. The ensemble is in silver plate with only a little wear. The number 12476 is stamped inside the lid which might be a production number. The ring has the Hukin and Heath trademark and an eagle. Hukin and Heath were based in Birmingham and the mark suggests it was made in the 1870's. The patent number on the mechanism is 5518 which is pre-1852.

The glass is very unusual. It is very heavy with a high lead content. It has a broad pontil. Each bulge in the glass is hand formed. Between the bulges a bradle (or similar) has been used to create indentations in the glass. This outlines each of the bulges. A simple technique very well executed. Sometimes these bulges are attributed to Christopher Dresser designs. Hukin and Heath are closely connected with Christopher Dresser as they appointed him as artistic director in 1878. This is certainly a super Art and Crafts design and of the period.
